Notes: Red berries. Holly is mentioned in the Shakespeare play, "As You Like It." The old English carol urges you to "Deck the halls with boughs of holly" because it was considered a magical plant in England. There were rules for using it, including not bringing it into the house before Christmas. It had to be taken down by Twelfth Night. Unmarried women were advised to tie a sprig of Holly to the bedpost to avoid being turned into a witch.
